Union Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs L Murugan has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking to resign from his ministerial post as well as his Rajya Sabha membership.

Murugan, who moved from the RSS-linked student organisation ABVP to the BJP, was appointed vice-chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes in 2017. He later entered electoral politics in Tamil Nadu.

He lost the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly election from Dharapuram but was inducted into the Union Council of Ministers on July 7, 2021. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, he contested from Nilgiris and lost, yet continued as a Minister of State.

Political observers are divided over the sudden resignation. One section believes he could be considered again for the post of BJP Tamil Nadu state president, while another says the decision reflects the party leadership’s call and that a return to the state president’s post is unlikely.

After tendering his resignation, Murugan told reporters that he wants to come to Delhi by getting elected through the Lok Sabha route from Tamil Nadu.
