Rome: Pope Leo, the leader of Catholics worldwide, has undergone a successful lung surgery at a hospital in Rome, the Vatican said in an official update.

Doctors recently detected a tumour in his lung at an early stage and advised surgery to remove it. The Vatican said the procedure was carried out as planned using advanced technology.

According to the statement, the lower part of the Pope’s right lung was removed without complications during the roughly 90-minute operation. Tissue analysis conducted during surgery confirmed lung adenocarcinoma.

The Vatican added that Pope Leo regained consciousness after the operation and has returned to a normal state. He reportedly had dinner and spoke with his private secretaries and Vatican staff.

He is expected to remain in hospital for about a week of rest, while additional examinations on the removed tissue will be conducted in the coming days, the statement said.
