Chennai: Tamil Nadu’s special Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) for government and aided school teachers has recorded a large number of failures, with about 1.10 lakh candidates not clearing the exam.

Under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, passing TET is mandatory for appointments as secondary grade and graduate teachers across schools. The Supreme Court has also directed that teachers appointed before the RTE provisions came into force must take the TET, while related cases filed by the Tamil Nadu government are pending.

Amid this backdrop, the state had announced that three special TET examinations would be conducted each year for the benefit of teachers. As part of this, the special TET was held on July 4 and 5.

Paper I (for secondary grade teachers) was written by 58,902 candidates, while Paper II (for graduate teachers) was taken by 1,58,617 candidates. The exam was conducted for 150 marks, with qualifying marks set at 90 for general category, 75 for BC/MBC, and 60 for SC/ST.

The results were released around midnight the day before yesterday. A total of 47,594 candidates cleared Paper I and 60,732 cleared Paper II, taking the overall pass count to 1,08,326 out of 2,17,519.
