Annamalai, head of the organisation ‘We The Leaders’, has announced that the group will contest the upcoming local body elections. He made the statement while addressing a gathering at Chozhapandi near Mannargudi in Tiruvarur district.
In his remarks, Annamalai said politics has increasingly turned into a space where rivals only blame each other. Recalling his street-by-street campaign during the Assembly elections in Dharapuram, he pointed to the shifting loyalties of elected representatives as a sign of what he described as an unhealthy political trend.
He said ‘We The Leaders’ has entered the field to break this pattern, and confirmed that the organisation will take part in the local body polls. He also suggested that when the group evolves into a political party, many would feel such an alternative is needed.
Annamalai added that there is nothing wrong with people from cinema entering politics, as voters support those they like. However, he stressed that people should vote with a clear understanding of why they are casting their vote.
Separately, the organisation’s general secretary, Aspire Swaminathan, issued a statement questioning the government’s plan to distribute cakes worth Rs 9.27 crore to 61.84 lakh schoolchildren for Children’s Day. He said safety conditions such as valid Food Safety and Standards Authority of India certification and freshness requirements are essential, and urged the government to reconsider the plan rather than act only after any incident.
