Mumbai Police have issued a notice directing Hindi actor Imran Khan to leave the country by October 28, according to reports.

The action follows his arrest in connection with a protest that was to be held at Mumbai’s Kranti Maidan. Around the same time, members of a group described as “Karappanpoochi” attempted a protest in Delhi on October 10 against the Chief Election Commissioner and were detained.

Imran Khan had also shared a photograph on social media showing him seated in a police vehicle after his detention.

Police said the notice was issued because the actor holds US citizenship and is therefore treated as a non-Indian. Under immigration provisions, foreigners are barred from participating in protests held in India.

As a result, authorities have set October 28 as the deadline for him to depart the country.
