New Delhi: Leaders of the INDIA alliance have decided to temporarily pause their ongoing protests in the national capital against the Election Commission’s SIR exercise and their demand for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.
Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, along with Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and others, have been holding demonstrations in Delhi in recent days. The alliance has also moved the Supreme Court against the SIR exercise, with the petition listed for hearing today.
The decision to defer the daily protests was taken during a tea meeting hosted by Rahul Gandhi at his Delhi residence for INDIA bloc leaders. With Durga Puja, Dussehra and Diwali falling in quick succession, leaders and party functionaries are expected to return to their home states, making daily protests in Delhi difficult.
Rahul Gandhi said the movement would not stop, even if the approach changes. He added that the alliance would also pursue legal remedies against the order restricting protests at Jantar Mantar, stressing that the break should not be seen as a retreat.
A large Congress public meeting is also scheduled in Delhi on November 1.
