Food Minister Venkataramanan on Tuesday responded to opposition allegations over rising prices in Tamil Nadu, saying the increase has been gradual over the past few years.

Citing examples, he said rice that cost Rs 52 per kg in 2023 rose to Rs 60 in 2024 and Rs 65 in 2025. He also pointed to tur dal prices, stating it went up from Rs 110 per kg in 2022 to Rs 171 in 2024.

The minister said the government is reviewing the quality of food supplies, identifying gaps and irregularities, and taking action where shortcomings are found. He added that essential commodities are being supplied without interruption to all ration card holders.

He said Amudham stores are selling essentials at lower prices, and attributed part of the price rise to reduced inflow of Karnataka Ponni and Andhra Ponni rice. He announced a plan to sell 25,000 metric tonnes of “Sanna” variety rice through 250 Amudham outlets at Rs 30 per kg, and said tur dal is being provided at Rs 130 per kg.

Venkataramanan further alleged that traders associated with certain parties are hoarding food items, contributing to price rise, and said steps are being taken to prevent hoarding.
