The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday said the northeast monsoon has commenced over Tamil Nadu, after the influence of the southwest monsoon weakened over the past couple of days.

The IMD also reported the onset of the season over Puducherry, south interior Karnataka and Kerala. Based on prevailing conditions, the department has warned of fairly steady rainfall across Tamil Nadu over the next five days.

An atmospheric circulation is present over central Kerala and adjoining areas, while another circulation is seen over the Kanyakumari Sea region and nearby areas, the IMD said.

In view of these systems, the weather office has issued a very heavy rain warning for Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Theni and Virudhunagar districts.

Separately, ministers including K A Sengottaiyan held discussions in Chennai on monsoon preparedness, focusing on precautionary measures for the city and other areas that are prone to heavy rain impacts.
