New Delhi: The Supreme Court has sought an explanation from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over a march led by the INDIA bloc towards the apex court on October 12.
The protest reportedly demanded the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and called for the cancellation of SIR-related work. Petitions were also filed by the INDIA bloc and separately on behalf of AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi against the intensive revision of electoral rolls.
During the hearing of the petitions, Chief Justice Suryakant strongly criticised the marchers for entering the Supreme Court premises as part of the rally. He said the judiciary cannot be threatened by anyone.
The court directed that notices be issued to Rahul Gandhi and Owaisi seeking their explanations. It also ordered the Union government and the Election Commission to file their responses to the opposition petitions.
