Washington: The Donald Trump-led US administration has announced a policy change that could significantly affect employment for immigrants and foreign workers in the country.
In the US, certain categories—such as foreign workers, spouses of H-1B visa holders, and asylum seekers—receive an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) that allows them to work temporarily.
Under the earlier system, applicants awaiting renewal could continue working for up to 540 days, and if approval did not arrive within that period, the extension was treated as automatic. This arrangement was introduced during former President Joe Biden’s administration to prevent job losses among eligible foreign nationals.
Under the new rule, individuals will not be able to keep working until the work permit document is officially issued and in hand. The change, introduced temporarily last year, has now been finalised after public feedback.
The rule will apply to renewal applications filed after October 30 last year, according to the report.
