Coimbatore-based KG Hospital chairman Dr Bhaktavatsalam has appealed to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay to take up key development demands for the city, including establishing an AIIMS hospital and building a ring road.
Speaking in Coimbatore, he said the city has grown on the strength of workers, entrepreneurs and industries such as MSMEs, textiles and healthcare, but has not received matching infrastructure support. He pointed to a sharp rise in vehicle numbers and worsening traffic congestion, along with inadequate roads and parking facilities.
Dr Bhaktavatsalam said Coimbatore’s population is around 20 lakh and could rise to 40 lakh in the coming years. He argued that many poor residents cannot afford private hospitals and that government hospitals are overcrowded, making the case for an AIIMS on the lines of Madurai to bring specialist doctors and advanced care.
He also called for more flyovers beyond the recently built GD flyover, faster expansion of the airport to meet rising medical tourism demand, and the creation of a satellite township near Coimbatore in view of rapid IT sector growth. He urged the Chief Minister to press for these needs and secure support from the Centre.
