New Delhi: The Union Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has instructed telecom operators to make caller-name display mandatory on mobile phones from November 1.
The move follows recommendations made by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in February 2024 to help people avoid being cheated through fraudulent calls. After the suggestion, some operators began showing the caller’s name on the screen even when the number was not saved on the handset.
With TRAI’s approval, DoT has now made it compulsory for all operators to implement the feature for users on 4G and 5G networks.
Under the system, when a call comes from an unsaved number, the associated name will be fetched from the telecom operator’s database and displayed along with the number. For calls from abroad, the screen will show it as an “international call”.
DoT also said businesses may request a preferred display name, but it must match the name listed in their GST registration, and operators will allow it only after verifying documents.
