Coimbatore is awaiting fresh funding for a set of long-pending Highways Department projects that residents consider critical to easing traffic and improving safety. With several proposals already announced or included in action plans, expectations have risen on whether Chief Minister Vijay will allocate the required funds.

Among the key demands is the proposed extension of the G.D. Naidu flyover corridor on Avinashi Road from Goldwins to Neelambur, a stretch that has not moved forward due to lack of allocation. The city is also seeking progress on the western bypass project, where land acquisition for Phase 2 has been completed but the four-laning work remains stalled after the project moved to an authority.

Calls have also been renewed for an eastern bypass to create a ring road on the outskirts and reduce congestion within the city, even as the plan is said to have been dropped by the Union government. On Avinashi Road, the cancellation of five planned pedestrian subways—citing the metro—has led to demands for pedestrian overbridges with lifts and escalators instead of waiting for the metro project.

Other proposals flagged include a flyover at the Lali Road junction to ease bottlenecks and provide a link road to Mettupalayam Road, and six-laning the Neelambur–Madukkarai stretch due to frequent accidents. The widening of the old Uppilipalayam roundabout, for which a project report has been prepared, is also being sought through the concerned authority with the issue to be taken up with the Union government.

Beyond highways, the list includes decisions on unused judges’ quarters at Race Course, steps to secure Union approval for a revised metro DPR through a special officer, and pending funding for revamping the Gandhipuram Central Bus Stand. The article also mentions shifting the omni bus stand outside city limits, reviving the integrated bus stand plan at Vellalore, resolving land and boundary issues for airport expansion, and urgent water-security measures such as desilting Pillur dam and obtaining approvals related to Siruvani dam storage and leak-prevention works.
