ED inquiry into alleged bribery

Chennai: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has begun an inquiry into allegations that bribes were paid in certain departments during the DMK government, officials said.

According to the officials, multinational companies planning industrial parks and data centre projects allegedly paid bribes to secure clearances and approvals. The suspected transactions are said to involve the Housing and Urban Development Department, the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) and the Environment Department.

The probe was triggered after information surfaced that ₹1.89 crore was allegedly paid as a bribe for setting up a data centre. Officials also said they have obtained documents indicating that a district collector received ₹50 lakh.

Investigators believe the money changed hands through intermediaries, and the inquiry is continuing to verify the trail and the roles of those involved.
