The Madras High Court has directed the Transport Department Commissioner to file a report on steps taken against the misuse of national and government emblems and unauthorised stickers displayed on vehicles.

The direction was issued when a case related to bus services came up for hearing before Justice N. Senthilkumar. The court also ordered that the Transport Commissioner be added as a respondent in the matter.

The judge sought details of enforcement over the past six months against the practice of placing unapproved stickers and labels such as “journalist”, “doctor”, “lawyer” and “police” on both government and private vehicles.

The court noted that former MPs and MLAs, retired officials and ex-office bearers are not authorised to use government emblems on their vehicles, letterheads or buildings, but many continue to do so. It also asked for a report on whether an earlier direction to remove wrongly used national emblems within a month and register cases against violators, issued to the DGP, has been implemented.
