Indian social activist Reema Nanavati, from Ahmedabad in Gujarat, has been honoured in the United States with the Hillary Rodham Clinton Award, which recognises leaders working for peace and security.

Nanavati serves as a director of the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA). Through the organisation, she has supported women in earning independent incomes and in building skills across sectors such as textiles, food production, agriculture and energy.

She has also led rehabilitation efforts for rural women affected by earthquakes, and has been involved in recovery work in countries including Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.

Her public service had earlier been recognised in India when the Union government conferred the Padma Shri on her in 2013.

The award was presented by former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security.
