New Delhi: BJP general secretary and former Union minister Smriti Irani launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his protests against the Election Commission.

Irani mocked Gandhi as a “prince” who cannot win elections but dreams of becoming an “emperor”, alleging that he is staging political drama.

She said Gandhi’s allegations of vote theft were not backed by evidence and claimed the issue was being raised to draw media attention.

Stressing that governments in a democracy can be changed only through elections, Irani said attempts to topple a government through agitation were not appropriate.

Defending the Election Commission, she said around 90% of the country’s 90 crore voters have been verified and about 20 lakh booth-level agents have participated in checking electoral rolls. She added that errors in voter lists must be corrected, and those alleging malpractice should provide proof.
