Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has sought details from the Finance Department on a proposal to distribute free grocery kits for Diwali, sources said.
The move comes as prices of essentials such as rice, pulses and other grocery items are reported to be on the rise in the state. Opposition parties have alleged that Tamil Nadu is leading in price rise, adding pressure on the ruling administration.
Against this backdrop, the government is considering supplying free grocery packages through ration shops during the Diwali festival period. The Chief Minister has reportedly asked the Finance Department to work out how much funding would be required for the scheme.
Some ministers have advised that a Diwali grocery kit could provide relief to the public, according to the report. Secretariat sources indicated that an announcement on the Diwali grocery package may be made by the Chief Minister.
