Trichy City Municipal Corporation officials on Thursday reclaimed a 15,000 sq ft parcel of land in Thiruvanaikaval, valued at around Rs 5 crore, which was allegedly encroached upon by a DMK circle secretary.

The land, part of the ‘Akila Garden’ housing layout, had been earmarked for a park, public pathway and a planned road, and was handed over to the Corporation for public use.

According to officials, the site had been occupied by Janarthanan (35), DMK circle secretary of Ward 6 in Thiruvanaikaval, along with Saravanan, son of former DMK area head Rajasekaran. A compound wall was reportedly built and structures such as a cattle shed and a car shed were set up.

Following multiple complaints received by the Trichy Collectorate and the Corporation, Municipal Commissioner Ponmani ordered action. A team led by Srirangam Assistant Commissioner Muthu Murugesa Pandiyan, along with Corporation staff and police, recovered the land and brought it under civic control.

It was also noted that Janarthanan’s mother, Kalaimani, is the Ward 6 municipal councillor.
