Nagapattinam: Officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) are questioning a TVK functionary and his friend in connection with an alleged attempt to smuggle methamphetamine from Nagapattinam to Sri Lanka by sea.
Based on specific inputs that the internationally banned narcotic was being moved through the coastal route, a 16-member team from the Tiruchirappalli zone conducted a surprise search early morning at a house in Prathaparampuram, Nagapattinam district.
During the operation, investigators found that a man identified as Boopalan had links with international smuggling networks and was allegedly operating as a key figure in the gang. Boopalan, who works as an advocate, is a district executive committee member of TVK. Officials are continuing their inquiry.
Party action followed soon after. In a statement, TVK district secretary Sukumar said Boopalan was being removed with immediate effect from all party responsibilities for allegedly engaging in illegal activities and bringing disrepute to the party.
