Heavy rain lashed Chennai through the night, prompting the government to step up rescue and relief measures. Minister Rajmohan inspected the Egmore and Pudupet areas on Friday and spoke to reporters about the situation.
He said the city received unexpected intense rainfall in a short span of time. According to him, rainwater was drained from more than 20 subways, and steps would be taken to ensure the public is not affected.
Relying on updates from the Meteorological Department, the government would decide on declaring holidays for schools, he said. The Health Department will organise medical camps, and teams will also conduct door-to-door health check-ups.
The minister said officials and workers were carrying out duties in coordination without party bias, and that the situation was under control. He noted that water entered a few houses located below road level, while rescue work was still ongoing in some places.
He added that sanitation work would be intensified after the water recedes. The Chief Minister, Vijay, is being updated on the rain impact every hour, and tasks have been assigned individually to ensure faster execution, he said.
