Chennai is under a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall today, according to the Chennai weather centre. The warning comes as the northeast monsoon is expected to intensify due to a low-pressure area forming over the Arabian Sea, with fresh cloud formations seen along the north coastal belt.
After heavy rain from yesterday evening, the red alert has been continued for today as well. Authorities have been asked to stay on high alert and respond quickly to any rain-related disruptions.
Chief Minister Vijay directed eight in-charge ministers to immediately come to Chennai. He instructed them to ensure swift solutions in areas where rainwater has stagnated and to personally inspect relief and drainage work across all 15 zones.
Chennai Corporation Commissioner Sameeran told reporters that the civic body is prepared to handle the heavy rain situation. He said the Chief Minister is monitoring the developments and that water is being removed from inundated locations using motor pumps.
