A private university campus in Perambalur has begun recycling wastewater generated from its hostel facilities, aiming to put it to productive agricultural use.

The institution said around 15,000 students stay in the campus hostel. Water used for bathing and washing clothes was earlier getting wasted by mixing into the ground.

To address this, the university has set up a system to collect wastewater from 60 points across the campus and treat it through a sewage treatment system. The treated water is then sent through pipelines and stored directly in a farm pond.

The farm pond has been created over about one acre with a depth of 11 feet, with a storage capacity of around 2.50 crore litres. The stored water is used for cultivation on about 80 acres managed by the campus agriculture college.

The university also rears fish in the pond, citing the presence of microorganisms in the stored water. It said fish waste, which is rich in nitrogen, supports natural farming and helps improve crop yields.
