Chennai: Supporters of Chief Minister Vijay say his frequent roadshows during district-wise tours are disrupting traffic and business activity, while also creating avoidable expenditure for the government.

Since taking charge, Vijay has been travelling periodically across districts to attend government functions, and has also visited neighbouring states such as Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Though he often flies by a special aircraft, he typically travels by road from the airport to event venues, greeting people from atop a campaign vehicle.

According to the report, police take control of the area a day in advance and halt traffic to prevent any disruption to the Chief Minister’s movement. While earlier chief ministers reportedly saw traffic stopped for up to about 30 minutes during road travel, Vijay’s roadshows are said to lead to closures lasting at least three to six hours, with police also advising shops in the area to remain shut.

The prolonged restrictions are said to affect daily wages for workers in small industries and retail establishments, and increase transport-related costs. The report also claims that extensive barricading and security arrangements from the airport onward can cost up to ₹5 crore, adding to pressure at a time of financial strain.

Supporters and some ministers are said to fear that if the approach is not changed, public dissatisfaction could grow over time. However, they are reportedly unsure about how to convey these concerns directly to the Chief Minister.
