Tamil Nadu minister Nirmal Kumar on Saturday alleged that the DMK was responsible for the rise in drug use and circulation in the state. Speaking to reporters in Chennai, he claimed methamphetamine supply had taken root during the DMK’s tenure.

He said the state had been pushed into a “bad situation” due to the spread of narcotics, and asserted that the government’s focus is to bring the problem under full control. According to him, Chief Minister Vijay is working on steps including the creation of a dedicated department to tackle drug circulation.

The minister also warned that action would be taken “100%” against anyone involved, irrespective of who they are.

On the power sector, Nirmal Kumar said precautionary measures are being taken ahead of the northeast monsoon. He noted a staff shortage in the electricity board and said contract appointments would be made only through tenders.

He added that steps are under way to replace 600 to 1,000 transformers in Chennai. Citing limited staff for meter reading, he said 5,000 additional workers would be appointed, and the smart meter project has been postponed by about two-and-a-half months.
