A new organisation named the Lal Hit Party has been formed in Delhi, projecting itself as a counter to the Karappan party and other opposition groups protesting the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The Karappan party had earlier led a major agitation in July over alleged irregularities in the NEET undergraduate medical entrance exam. The report said the protests were followed by the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

In recent weeks, the Karappan party has continued demonstrations, accusing Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of taking unilateral decisions in the SIR process and demanding that he step down.

Against this backdrop, the Lal Hit Party has been launched with Delhi-based social and political activist Ayan Patnagar as its coordinator. The group has held a protest in the Janpath area, criticising the Karappan party and other opposition outfits.

Speaking to reporters, Patnagar said the organisation was not formed to contest elections, but to oppose what he described as attempts to weaken democracy and create confusion, adding that the group would work as a coalition of different teams to present its views and arguments.
