Chennai: BJP leaders have reportedly advised actor Dhanush not to step into politics without the backing of superstar Rajinikanth, saying it would be difficult to make an impact in Tamil Nadu’s political arena otherwise.
The development comes amid speculation that Dhanush is preparing for a political foray, encouraged by the rise of actor-turned-politician Vijay, who is said to have formed the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam and captured power in the state. Film industry circles also point to welfare activities carried out through Dhanush fan clubs and say he has been discussing his political plans with close associates.
According to the report, a senior RSS functionary from Tamil Nadu met Dhanush at his residence in Chennai’s Poes Garden in late August, triggering political buzz. In the past two days, Dhanush has reportedly been camping in Delhi and holding consultations with several people about his next steps.
Sources said Dhanush believes he would have to take on both Chief Minister Vijay and the DMK simultaneously if he enters politics, and therefore sees the need for support from the BJP, which is in power at the Centre. It is also claimed that BJP leader Nitin Nabin and a few others, said to be linked to Tamil Nadu BJP in-charge Ram Madhav, met him in Delhi.
During these discussions, the BJP side is said to have told Dhanush that Tamil cinema’s mass influence can be ranked as MGR, Rajinikanth and Vijay, and that no other actor matches their reach. They reportedly argued that Vijay has filled the political space Rajinikanth left behind, and advised Dhanush to seek Rajinikanth’s support if he wants to challenge Vijay effectively.
