India has criticised what it called attempts to portray the country negatively at the United Nations using unverified allegations and misleading statistics.
Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, External Affairs Ministry Deputy Secretary Bhargava Tamrakar said India strongly opposes narratives built on unsupported claims about the world’s largest democracy.
She said human rights and freedom of expression should not be used as tools to exert political pressure against countries. Tamrakar pointed to India’s domestic mechanisms, including habeas corpus petitions and the National and State Human Rights Commissions, as avenues to address alleged violations.
She added that India is always ready to clarify any specific complaints backed by proper documentation and will continue to cooperate with international human rights bodies.
