Mumbai: Visiting US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said India remains a key trade and business partner for the United States and an important member of the Quad. He also noted that External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has visited the US four times.

Rubio said the US State Department does not conduct trade agreement negotiations, but added that he is keeping track of developments. He indicated that an agreement is nearing signature and expressed hope that “good news” would come soon.

Highlighting India’s capabilities in oil refining, Rubio said the country can process even difficult grades of crude and has done so in the past. He suggested that, if Venezuela’s crude production returns, India could be well placed to take advantage of discounted Venezuelan crude.

He clarified that Venezuela alone cannot resolve global supply shortages, but said it could help over time and provide short-term relief. Rubio added that the matter has been discussed with India earlier, and that India is prepared, though obstacles such as restrictions may need to be overcome.

Rubio called India’s stated intent to diversify its energy imports a “smart move,” noting it cannot be achieved overnight. He said India has made significant progress on this front and that the US is pleased to see it.
