UN criticism and questions to Rubio
The United Nations had criticised police action taken against a protest by CJP activists in Delhi, staged against Chief Election Commissioner Gyaneshkumar.
Rubio: No interference in India’s politics
Speaking during his visit to India, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was asked by reporters about the protest. Rubio said it was an internal political matter for India and that he would not interfere in the country’s politics.
Pointing to democratic processes
Rubio said India is a democracy where elections are held, and reiterated that he would not step into domestic political issues. He added that protests take place daily in the United States as well.
Wider remarks on protests abroad
He also said he does not comment on unrest in Europe, where, he noted, property is damaged and buildings are set on fire. Rubio said public expression through protests and other means reflects political debate and differences of opinion within a country.
