The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the northeast monsoon has intensified over Tamil Nadu, bringing widespread rainfall over the last 24 hours.
According to IMD officials, heavy rain was recorded in three districts and moderate rain in 13 districts. The highest rainfall was reported from Chennai’s MCR area, which received 13 cm.
The IMD said the active phase of the northeast monsoon is expected to continue until October 26, after which it may gradually weaken. The Western Ghats regions, delta districts and southern districts have been receiving above-normal rainfall.
A low-pressure area has formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Tamil Nadu coastal areas, but it is not expected to intensify into a cyclone. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely in southern districts such as Ramanathapuram and Thoothukudi over the next six days.
Another low-pressure area may form around October 23 over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the central east region, with a possibility of moving westwards. For Chennai, the IMD forecast moderate rain for the next three days, with no heavy rain expected.
