The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has halted food assistance for about 700,000 Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, citing a severe financial shortfall.

WFP supports people affected by poverty and hunger worldwide, as well as those hit by war, internal unrest and natural disasters. In the Palestinian territories, it has been providing food to around 1.6 million people in Gaza and about 400,000 in the West Bank amid the impact of the Israel war.

According to WFP Acting Executive Director Carl Skau, donations from several countries have stopped, triggering the funding crisis. As a result, food aid will be suspended for roughly 500,000 people in Gaza and 200,000 in the West Bank.

Skau urged the international community to mobilise funds, saying about Rs 4,270 crore is needed to continue food deliveries in the areas for the next six months. He warned that without immediate funding, hundreds of thousands in Gaza could face the risk of dying from starvation.
