India delivered a sharp rebuttal to Pakistan at the United Nations, rejecting Islamabad’s remarks on developments in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking at the UN, Bhavika Mangalanandan, First Secretary at India’s Permanent Mission, said Pakistan’s professed concern over Jammu and Kashmir should instead be directed toward development in areas under its illegal occupation.

She also pointed to a decline in Pakistan’s minority population and alleged that minority rights there are not being protected. A government that cannot ensure the safety of its own minorities, she said, is not qualified to offer advice to India.

Referring to the 1999 Kargil war, the Indian representative said it was contradictory for Pakistan—described as having refused to accept the bodies of its own fallen soldiers—to speak emotionally about faith, religious freedom and good conduct.

She added that terrorism does not only kill innocent people but also damages the mindset of a nation.
