A court in the US state of New Mexico has ordered Meta, the company that runs Facebook, to pay a penalty of Rs 2.36 lakh crore in a case alleging misuse of users’ personal data and confidential information.
The case traces back to the 2016 US presidential election campaign period, when political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica was found to have collected personal information of about 87 million Facebook users without their consent.
In 2021, New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez filed the lawsuit against Meta over the incident. The court said Meta violated consumer protection laws more than 4.3 million times.
The penalty is being described as one of the largest fines recorded in US corporate history.
