US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said the Trump administration’s tightened visa rules, including restrictions linked to the H-1B programme, are not aimed specifically at India.

Speaking to an English news channel during his visit to India, Rubio argued that the changes are intended to prioritise American workers and protect US national interests. The measures have affected Indian job-seekers looking for work in the US as well as American companies that hire them.

Rubio said the policy applies to all countries and is meant to address issues such as fraud, irregularities and concerns that US workers are losing job opportunities.

He added that business-linked immigration programmes have, in many instances, led to unchecked misuse and malpractice, and that the administration is seeking to correct those problems.
