Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday launched a programme aimed at rejuvenating the Yamuna river at an event held in Dwarka, Delhi.
During the function, he laid foundation stones for water-related projects of the Delhi Jal Board valued at Rs 8,941.22 crore.
Shah said efforts to restore the Yamuna have been accelerated, adding that around 40% of the work to prevent pollution has been completed in a short period.
He alleged that during the tenures of the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party governments, sewage was allowed to flow into the river. He noted that BJP governments are currently in power in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, and said the three states are pursuing a time-bound joint action plan.
According to him, measures are being intensified to stop industrial chemical effluents and residential sewage from entering the Yamuna. He said the target is to fully clean the river by May 2029, including strengthening sewage treatment plants, expanding treatment infrastructure and improving drinking water facilities.
