Northeast monsoon conditions have intensified over Tamil Nadu, bringing spells of heavy rain over the past few days. Meanwhile, a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has strengthened into a deep depression, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The system, which formed as a low-pressure area on Thursday, intensified around 5.30 am on Friday. The IMD said it could further develop into a depression later on Friday and may become a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal on Saturday (October 25).

Weather officials indicated that the deep depression expected on Saturday could intensify into Cyclone ‘Arnab’ by Monday. The IMD said the cyclone is likely to form within the next 48 hours.

The system is expected to approach coastal Andhra Pradesh by the morning of October 28. While earlier projections suggested a possible Odisha landfall, reports now indicate the track may shift towards Andhra Pradesh.

Tamil Nadu may continue to receive heavy rainfall for the next three days, the update added.
