Chennai: Special Intelligence Wing police stopped Archana, daughter of “Granite” Veeramani, when she attempted to travel abroad, leading to the cancellation of her trip.

Veeramani (85) has been arrested in a POCSO case related to alleged sexual assault of minors. Police have also arrested his associate Shanti (61) and others, taking the total number of accused to eight.

Investigators say Veeramani allegedly tried to evade legal action by offering police officials cash worth several crores and 23 kg of gold bars. Police claim the deal was facilitated by Prakash Kannaiya, identified as the son of a railway union office-bearer, who is now being searched for and is said to be hiding in London.

Police allege Archana was part of Prakash’s close circle and attempted to help conceal the allegations against her father. She was stopped while trying to fly on a Singapore Airlines flight.

Separately, the Chennai POCSO special court granted police custody for two days to question Veeramani, Shanti and Mahendra Simhan. The court had earlier permitted three days’ custody for former assistant Ganesan.
