Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference founder Farooq Abdullah has triggered a political row after claiming that Pakistan is “protecting” the people of Jammu and Kashmir by repeatedly raising the Kashmir issue in international forums.
Speaking at a National Conference event in Baramulla district, Abdullah said Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif keeps highlighting that the Kashmir issue remains unresolved. He also alleged that the Centre’s BJP-led government does not pay attention to the grievances of the people and that its intentions on the matter are not good.
Abdullah further said nothing can be expected from the Central government and urged people to build the courage to fight for their rights. He warned that without such resolve, the community could be “wiped out” and its identity could disappear.
A video of the speech circulated on social media, intensifying the controversy.
Reacting sharply, Jammu and Kashmir BJP president Sat Sharma said Abdullah was able to speak so boldly only because India guarantees freedom of speech. He rejected the remarks, accused Abdullah of “pleading Pakistan’s case” while enjoying facilities in India, and demanded a public apology, adding that otherwise he could choose to move to Pakistan.
