A remark by Dindigul Leoni, a well-known debate speaker and DMK functionary, has triggered controversy after he spoke at a family wedding event of former minister KKSSR in Chennai.

In his speech, Leoni compared the present TVK government to the sandals associated with the Ramayana narrative, saying that just as Rama’s sandals were believed to have “ruled” Ayodhya, the “unfastened sandals” were now ruling the country.

He argued that people continue to benefit from various schemes and therefore keep remembering the previous leadership while availing them. He cited initiatives such as the women’s entitlement assistance, the breakfast scheme, the “Arivulaga Thirappu” programme, and metro rail travel.

Leoni also suggested that the current administration would not last long, making a reference to “14 weeks or 14 months,” and said the wedding was conducted successfully by leaders who would bring back the “rising sun” symbol. His comments have drawn strong criticism and added to the political debate.
