Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday said the Central government is making sustained efforts to ensure that prices do not rise, citing measures aimed at keeping the supply of essential commodities uninterrupted.

Speaking to reporters in Tiruchirappalli, she said a ministerial group has been tasked with monitoring price trends and taking steps to prevent spikes. She added that since 2014, the government has been taking actions every year to avoid supply disruptions and curb inflationary pressures.

As an example, Sitharaman referred to the decision to keep rice exports on hold, stating that such steps are taken as part of broader efforts to manage domestic prices while also ensuring farmers receive favourable returns.

On the rupee’s value, she said the earlier approach of trying to hold a currency at a fixed level is no longer the norm, and that the currency tends to find its natural level. She added that the Reserve Bank of India takes steps to prevent excessive volatility.

She also spoke about the SIR issue, noting that the Supreme Court has taken up complaints from across the country and that participating in the legal process and presenting arguments in court is one route. She said political protests by opposition parties are another route and are currently taking place.
