Kavita Kumari from Ramgarh district in Jharkhand, who has been struggling with poverty after losing her husband, had applied to join the home guards to support her family. She is responsible for caring for her in-laws and two children.

A few days ago, she took part in a practice run organised by an academy at the Sido Kanhu district ground. Images and videos of her running barefoot—without a tracksuit or shoes—spread widely on social media, prompting many to offer help.

In the official selection process held in Ramgarh, candidates had to complete a 1,600-metre run within 10 minutes. Kavita finished the distance in 8 minutes and 57 seconds, clearing the running requirement.

However, in the next stage—high jump—she could not clear the required height despite being given three attempts. Officials declared her unsuccessful in the selection, and her dream of joining the home guards did not materialise this time.

People who learned that she left the venue in distress have been offering her words of comfort, according to reports.
