New Delhi: The Congress has repeatedly alleged that China has occupied Indian territory, a charge the Union government and the Indian Army have consistently denied.

In the latest instance, Congress spokesperson Ritu Chaudhary shared two videos on social media claiming Chinese forces had entered and occupied Indian areas.

The Army said the first clip was being misrepresented. According to its clarification, the footage shows vehicles moving on the approved trade route via Nathu La Pass in Sikkim, and not a Chinese military incursion into Indian territory.

On the second video, the Army said a clip featuring an officer, identified as Girish Kalia, had been altered using deepfake technology. It stated the original video was from a press interaction held in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir, on October 27, 2023, about infiltration along the Line of Control, and that the officer did not claim China had occupied Arunachal Pradesh or that the Indian Army was denied access.

Reacting to the episode, Union minister Kiren Rijiju alleged there was an attempt to tarnish the Army’s image and said Congress should apologise for circulating what he called an AI-generated fake video.
