Chennai’s Ennore coast witnessed intense sea surge on Monday night as Cyclone ‘Arnab’, formed over the Bay of Bengal, approached landfall in Andhra Pradesh.

According to the weather department, the cyclone is expected to cross the Andhra coast early Tuesday. Ahead of this, sea conditions turned rough around 8 pm in Ennore, with strong waves reported from Bharathiyar Nagar to Thazhanguppam.

Residents said waves rose more than 10 feet, crossed the sea wall and entered inland areas including Bharathiyar Nagar and Netaji Nagar, spilling over the Ennore beach road.

The surge swept away parked autorickshaws, two-wheelers and roadside shops. With the sea continuing to lash the coast, traffic on the Ennore express road was cut off and vehicles were diverted via the Kathivakkam highway.
