Former DMK minister Mahesh, 48, was arrested by the Chennai Central Crime Branch on allegations of collecting bribes exceeding Rs 100 crore by promising government recognition for private schools. He has been remanded and lodged in Puzhal Central Prison.
Following the arrest, DMK supporters reportedly surrounded police personnel from the time Mahesh was taken into custody until he was brought to the Puzhal prison premises, voicing opposition to the detention.
Just before Mahesh was lodged in prison, Vellore Corporation councillor Ditta Saravanan—described as a Mahesh supporter—allegedly confronted him in an agitated manner, asking whether the situation would have arisen if the “Karur incident” had been “finished” earlier.
Based on a complaint, Puzhal police registered a case against Ditta Saravanan under four sections. Police said he has since gone into hiding. He is also the organiser of the DMK Youth Wing for Vellore North district.
