New Delhi: Union minister and senior BJP leader Kiren Rijiju on Monday demanded that the Congress issue a public apology, alleging the party circulated AI-generated fake videos about Chinese aggression along India’s borders.
The controversy began after Congress spokesperson Ritu Chaudhary from Bihar shared two videos on X, claiming the Chinese Army had entered Indian territory and that parts of Arunachal Pradesh had been occupied. She also posted a morphed clip made to appear as if Lieutenant General Girish Kalia was speaking on the issue.
In a statement, the Indian Army rejected the claims and said the videos shared on social media were created using artificial intelligence and were misleading. The Army clarified that the Nathu La pass in Sikkim is an officially permitted border trade route between India and China, and routine movement of commercial vehicles was wrongly portrayed as a military incursion.
The Army also said the video attributed to Lt Gen Girish Kalia was entirely fake. It noted that the footage was from October 2023 and related to an anti-infiltration operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district, and that he had not made any comments about Arunachal Pradesh or denial of supplies to troops.
Reacting to the Army’s clarification, Rijiju said spreading such AI-made fake videos undermines the dignity of the armed forces and called it a serious act that warranted an immediate apology to the public.
