A head-on collision between two trains in Spain has left 30 passengers dead, according to initial reports carried by the country’s government news agency and local media.

The crash occurred on the Madrid–Andalusia high-speed corridor between Los Yébenes and Urda in Toledo province. One train was travelling from Madrid to Seville, while another was approaching from the opposite direction when the impact took place.

Following the collision, coaches from both trains derailed and caught fire. Emergency response teams were deployed as rescue operations continued at the site.

Urda mayor Manuel Galán said rescue work had been intensified and medical emergency teams had been sent. He added that the cause of the accident was not yet known and an investigation was under way.

In the aftermath, rail services between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia were temporarily suspended, officials said.
