Tamil Nadu has revised auto-rickshaw fares after 13 years, issuing a government order on Tuesday night. The new structure sets a minimum fare of Rs 50 for the first 1.8 km, and Rs 25 for every additional kilometre.

The previous revision was made in August 2013, when the minimum fare for 1.8 km was fixed at Rs 25 and the rate for each subsequent kilometre at Rs 12. Since then, auto drivers’ associations have repeatedly sought a hike, citing rising fuel prices, insurance costs, vehicle maintenance expenses and higher spare-parts rates.

The Chennai High Court had, in February 2022, directed the state government to revise auto fares by balancing the interests of drivers and passengers. The latest order follows continued demands from auto unions.

The government has instructed the State Transport Authority and Regional Transport Officers to implement the revised fares. Under the new rules, rides between 10:00 pm and 5:00 am will attract a 1.5 times surcharge over the regular fare, and waiting charges have been fixed at Re 1 per minute.
