The Tamil Nadu government has officially declared a public holiday on Monday, November 9, the day after Diwali, and issued a government order to this effect.
Diwali this year falls on Sunday, November 8. With Saturday already being a weekend holiday, several groups had sought an additional holiday on November 9 to help people return after celebrating the festival in their hometowns.
Responding to those requests, the state announced that November 9 will be a government holiday across Tamil Nadu. The holiday will apply to government offices, public sector undertakings and educational institutions.
To compensate for the additional holiday, the government order said that Saturday, November 28, will be observed as a working day.
