Sources indicate the BJP’s central leadership is discussing the possibility of offering two Union Minister of State (MoS) positions to its alliance partners in Tamil Nadu, as part of a plan to strengthen the NDA in the state.
The report notes that the NDA line-up in Tamil Nadu has included parties such as the BJP, PMK, AMMK, TMC and others in recent elections. At present, AIADMK, PMK and AMMK are said to be continuing within the NDA framework in the state.
The deliberations come after L Murugan, who had served as a Union MoS since 2021, recently resigned. He also stepped down from his Rajya Sabha membership, and BJP leaders and functionaries in Tamil Nadu are reportedly making efforts to secure the vacancy.
However, the leadership is said to be weighing whether giving a ministerial berth to a Tamil Nadu representative would translate into electoral gains, particularly with an eye on the 2029 Lok Sabha election. According to the report, the party is therefore considering allocating MoS posts to long-time allies like AIADMK and PMK to consolidate and coordinate the alliance.
BJP functionaries in Tamil Nadu were quoted as saying the leadership wants to expand the NDA and bring like-minded parties together by accommodating alliance partners in the Union Council of Ministers, making it possible that allies could get the posts instead of BJP leaders from the state.
